WASHINGTON, D.C. — Last week, House Judiciary Committee voted 27-9 to report favorably to the full House the “Brady Bill.” Seventh District Congressman D. French Slaughter Jr., voted with the majority in support of the bill.
The Brady Bill, otherwise known as H.R. 467, would create a nationwide, seven day waiting period before the purchase of all handguns. The legislation contains a special exemption for firearms dealers in states like Virginia that have in place on-the-spot, computerized, telephone background checks. In November 1989, Virginia’s instant background check law pertaining to the purchase of short barrel handguns and certain semi-automatic firearms took effect.
“As I considered this legislation, I was concerned about whether the bill would be able to accomplish what it seeks to do. I wanted to know if it compromised constitutional rights.
