Mr. Johnson is a member of the Virginia Defense Force, an organization like a state militia which is a back-up to the Virginia National Guard. He told Mr. Compton that the Virginia Defense Force is trained to conduct search and rescue operations and that such an activity would be considered a part of its mission.
Calls to the Sheriffs Department and to Third Brigade commander Lt. Col. Robert Brown of Warrenton, resulted in Governor L. Douglas Wilder’s decision to cut orders for local units of the VADF to conduct the search on Saturday, July 2L | « Mr. Johnson and James Swindler Jr. of Sperryville were among the members of the Virginia Defense Force who joined in the search, along with personnel from several area fire departments and rescue squads, as well as friends and relatives from Rappahannock and Culpeper counties joined in the effort.
By four that afternoon the search had been completed, but no clues were found.
Since then the calls to Mr. Compton and visits with him have continued, but there has been no success in finding Mrs. Compton or her car.
