Benefit yard sale

The Castleton Community Volunteer Fire Company (CCVFD) will be having a yard sale on Aug. 25. The time and location will be announced soon. Anyone wishing to donate items for the sale can call 937-5614 or 937-6051. All donated items will be appreciated and the proceeds from the sale will go towards operating expenses of CCVFD.

Flint Hill carnival underway

The Flint Hill Volunteer firemen’s carnival began Aug. 1 and will continue through Aug. 4. On Thursday evening beginning at 6:30 the newly crowned Miss Virginia, Shannon DePuy of Amherst will lead the parade. Ronald McDonald, courtesy of McDonald’s in Front Royal and Winchester will also be featured in this year’s parade. Saturday evening will be the awarding of prizes which will include a 1990 Ford. RAA annual picnic

The Rappahannock Athletic Association will hold its annual picnic for Little League players, coaches and their families on Saturday, Aug. 4 beginning at 10 a.m. at Stuart Field in Amissville. The day will include lunch, an awards ceremony and “family baseball fun all day,” according to the organizers. Possible games include the league mothers against the major and minor league teams, and the coaches against the Babe Ruth team. The public is invited to attend.

Fall soccer registration

Fall soccer registration will be held on fee day, Thursday, Aug. 30 at Rappahannock Elementary School. Boys and girls K thru 8th grade are invited to “come and register, everyone else does,” said an organizer.

Not for writers only

Learn how you can free the writer within in a workshop led by Nol Putnam, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 19 in the town hall. Using simple techinques, participants will write briefly on a variety of topics and may opt to share their work in a safe, receptive environment. No critique will be given. The fee is $25 per person. Dance to benefit WVFD

The Washington Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a dance on Saturday, Aug. 18 on Gay Street at the courthouse. At 6 p.m. there will be gospel singing and from 8 p.m. to midnight the New Riders Band will perform. There will also be volleyball and kickball, beer, wine, pizza, hot dogs and more. Cost is $2 per person to benefit WVFD.

Reunion planned

The annual reunion of the family of the late Alfred and Catherine Gearing Jenkins will he held Sunday, Aug. 12 at the Rappahannock Recreation Center, Route 211, Washington. All friends and relatives are urged to attend. Lunch will be served at 12:30.

Writers group to meet

A critique group for writers will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 15 at the home of Clay Fulghum. For more information call 987-3105.

Overeaters Anonymous to meet

Overeaters Anonymous will begin meeting every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop eating compulsively. There are no dues or fees. The first regular meeting will be on Tuesday, Aug. 7.

AA meetings at Trinity

An Alcoholics Anonymous meeting is held every Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Washington.

Cookbooks available

The Rappahannock Senior Citizens “Old Family Recipe” books are back. If you would like a cookbook please mail $5.50 plus $1.25 for postage and handling to Rappahannock Senior Nutrition Site, Trinity Episcopal Church, Washington, VA 22747.

Middle Street art classes

A Life Drawing class meets at the Gallery each Thursday from 7:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. A model is provided, each person should bring their own supplies. The fee is $10 per class.
