The county’s Board of Supervisors will decide this month whether Rappahannock County will install a 9-1-1 emergency telephone system.
The board has advertised a $2 per month surcharge for each telephone customer in the county that will be used to pay for installation of the computerized system. The supervisors will hold a public hearing on the proposed surcharge at their Aug. 6 meeting at 7 p.m.
Since the money collected from the surcharge can only be used to pay for the system, according to County Administrator John McCarthy, approval of the surcharge means the county will install the “Enhanced 9-1-1” system.
The $2 surcharge, Mr. McCarthy said, will remain in place until the estimated $300,000 cost for equipment and installation of the E-9-1-1 system is covered. He said projections, indicate the county will raise approximately $72,000 each year through the charge, so it will take a “minimum” of three years and probably longer to cover the cost of the system.
The surcharge will then be lowered to an amount sufficient to cover an estimated $20,000 per year in continuing costs, including maintenance of equipment and updates of the computerized data base.
