Virginia newspapers report enlisted military personnel, fearing cuts, are asking Congress for severance pay of up to $60,000 and other benefits to “cushion” their move into civilian life. Since enlisted personnel begin serving at about 18, those with fewer than 20 years in service are about 30 years of age.
