number of the caller, along with the precise location of the home, the appropriate fire and rescue units to dispatch, landmarks along the route and any other pertinent information included in the database. That could include any medical problems or the type of construction of the house.
In the case of a fire or rescue emergency, a printer at each of the county’s fire stations would produce a paper copy of the screen display for the responding units.
So far, Mr. McCarthy said, the Rappahannock County Fire and Rescue Association has recommended installation of the Enhanced 9-1-1 system, but the board has not formally approved it. “When they impose the surcharge, that decision must be made. That is the only thing the money can be used for.”
The monthly charge for telephone subscribers is greater than in neighboring Culpeper and Fauquier counties, which have approved surcharges of less than $1 per month due to economies of scale, the county administrator explained. “Part of the problem is that we need the same hardware that Culpeper and Fauquier need — but they have a much larger subscriber base to support it.”
The equipment, he said, will cost about $180,000, and slightly more than $100,000 more will be needed to pay for the aerial photos, maps, county-wide database and the naming of roads and assignment of numbers to every home in the county.
