Sheriff Peters said his department has received several reports of 'sitings, “but none have been confirmed.” He said that his department was also working with other sheriffs departments that are investigating disappearances and murders, including an apparent murder two weeks ago in Fredericksburg which involved a woman abducted at a Food Lion store, but “we have found nothing to connect this with any other disappearance. ” Sheriff Peters said his main goal is to find Mrs. Compton or her car. “Hopefully she will be all right,” he said. “We have to hope for the best but be prepared for the worst.” He said that a number of relatives have been involved and have helped. “The family has been real good about assisting us,” he concluded.
Mrs. Compton, 66, is described as 5 feet, 7 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds, with blond hair and hazel eyes. When last seen on July 5 she was wearing mint green slacks, a green, pink and white striped blouse and tennis shoes. Her car is a 1988 Oldsmobile, silver/gray in color, with Virginia license plates SJZ643.
