1-1 will be routed to the Front Royal dispatch office, while “987” and "547” customers who dial the emergency number will reach the Culpeper County dispatch office.
In both cases, time is wasted as the dispatchers must transfer the caller to the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Office to handle the call.
Mr. McCarthy explained that once the new telephone system is installed in the jail addition now under construction, Rappahannock will have the capability to transfer calls from this dispatch center to the Sheriffs Office in Culpeper with “one touch” of a button. That would enable calls mistakenly routed to Washington to be switched to Culpeper with a minimum of wasted time, Mr. McCarthy said.
If that system is put into place, residents in the “987” exchange, nearly all of whom are in Rappahannock County, would be able to use the basic 9-1-1 system now in place. The 79 telephones in that exchange which are located in Culpeper County would connect with Rappahannock County
