Cancer groups
are different
To the Editor:
I believe that some of our citizens who wish to support efforts to help cancer victims and their families have been misled by a recent mail campaign from the “Cancer Fund of America,” which has requested door-to-door campaigners.
Although a small print disclaimer negates affiliation with the American Cancer Society, many readers appear to have not noticed and have assumed they were supporting it— even to the point of making out their checks to the American Cancer Society. The latter is already organized into local and neighborhood groups whose funds are expended locally. It will not begin its annual fundraising until April.
If you have already given to the Cancer Fund of America, be aware that your contribution may not be distributed locally. You will be hearing soon from the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, whose local activities are well established and can be attested to by many Rappahannock citizens who have been helped.
