“The ground really is terrific here—ideal footing for running any type of race,” said Mr. Neilson. “We had a lovely run, especially coming off the hill the final time. It was nice to have my other runner right there in my hip pocket.”
In the two-horse open timber contest, conditioner Neilson gave Mr. Traurig a leg-up on winner Palace Party. Owned by Foxbrook Farm, the gelding was a maiden timber winner at Rappahannock in 1991. The strapping bay galloped stride for stride with Best Northern (Greg Ryan up) during most of the 2'/2-mile trip.
“Palace Party is very exciting. He is Irish-bred. By the way he won here today, he could be any sort of useful runner. I want to bring him back to run in the Middleburg Hunt Cup—I like that course and think it suits him,” Mr. Neilson stated.
Racegoers may have wondered how owner-rider Richard Jones transmogrified staff field hunter Lydie Breeze into a worthy challenger of the foxhunters series crown. The Goshen (Md.) Hunt master of foxhounds rode his mare to victory in the Foxhunters Timber.
“My wife, Karen, whips for the Goshen pack off of this horse,” noted Mr. Jones. “She is a very steady runner, and a good jumper—today she jumped especially well. She really isn’t in ‘racehorse’ training. We hunt Lydie Breeze on Wednesdays, then race her on Saturdays. She’s a tough-knocking mare and can hold up to that schedule.”
Two flat races split at Rapphannock making for four full divisions of non-jumping action. Set at 5/8ths of a mile, the first turf contest saw Chronicle of the Horse editor John Strassburger steer Mary Litterio’s Complete Move to a nose victory over Star Jenn (Chris Kolb up). Shattered Promises (Kathleen O’Keefe up) came up a close third.
In the second division of the turf dash, trainer-rider David Bourke pushed with hands and heels to send Iberian Island away to score by an easy five lengths.
