Elected school boards
Mrs. Massie said she is not in favor of the General Assembly’s move to allow localities the option of holding direct election of School Board members, even though she hopes to serve another term when her fifth term expires this summer.
“My real concern is that I don’t believe school boards and politics will mix,” she said.
“I would say I will probably do it again, if they want me to. It’s a part of giving back to the community,” she explained.
Faculty assessment
The current public school faculty, she said, is the backbone of the school system. “We have a very good group of teachers, and I’m happy to see we could offer them the master’s program through Shenandoah University,” she said. More than 30 teachers have taken advantage of the program.
As a board member, she has endorsed increases in health-care benefits and step increases in recent years. “I hope one day we can offer 100 percent for teachers, but a large increase in the cost of premiums means we’re still playing catch-up.”
