ner ocnooi ooara representative at the time was Ralph Rowsie of Jackson District. Mr. Rowsie became ill and was not planning to seek another term, so Mrs. Massie agreed to seek the seat at the urging of a group of Jackson District citizens.
Her two children are both products of the county’s public schools. James Jr. farms Meadow Grove with his father, and Sarah Massie Cheatwood lives and teaches in Warrenton.
In addition to the approximately 170 cows on Meadow Grove, they also sell antiques, but hog and sheep operations there have long since been stopped.
In a two-hour interview at her lovely, manicured farmhouse last week, Mrs. Massie discussed some of the topics that the School Board has been facing of late: the middle school expansion proposals, the PRIDE survey on student substance abuse, election of school boards and a range of others subjects.
A middle school?
A School Board committee to address the need for a third school in the county has endorsed building a middle school, citing an upswing in student enrollment and curricular advantages, among other things.
Mrs. Massie said she is “for the purchase of land. I am for looking down the road and keeping a handle on the number of children in our school system.”
