phone answering machine delivered this message: “On Friday next there will be a meeting of interested investors to determine the relative values of randomly distributed holdings.” Poker anyone?
Something of note about human idiosyncrasies, things that I have discovered about myself. Over the years I have always tried to get a peek at the eye chart before I took the eye exam so that I would get a good grade. When I got home with the new glasses I always complained that they were not strong enough and blamed the doctor. Next time I am going to fail the test one line higher. Reading will be comfortable at last. Another mistake that I have put up with' for years. I have always tried new shoes on my right foot. Over these same years my left foot has always hurt and the toes curl up. Well, you guessed it, my left foot is bigger than my right one and it took 67 years to figure this out.
More ridiculous—I love to play golf and every year I honestly believe that I am going to score a better game than previous years. The truth is, of course, that as the body ages the game deteriorates. I play with a younger competitor who preys on this weakness. He encourages me to think this way before we establish the wager. I believe I have been paying for his golf too long. Then he calls me a “duffer.” This hurts my feelings. I got even, he is the one where-in that I first made a “whiff’ look like a practice swing.
Duffer implies incompetence, maybe a bit careless, perhaps even a bit of a slob. Anyway I do not like being referred to as a slob, or the like. I was trying to encourage some sympathy from my present consort but she confirmed my worst suspicions. She said I was definitely a slob and immediately furnished a long list to prove it.
