her tenure the schools have split away from their joint operations agreement with Warren County Public Schools, and Mrs. Massie has sat on the board with 19 other board members during her 20 years.
Her involvement with the Rappahannock Public Schools began after her son, James F. Massie Jr., was born in 1957. At that time the county’s schools were smaller institutions scattered around Rappahannock, and the Massies’ local school had been at Forest Grove, a tworoom building.
When Forest Grove was slated to be closed, the plan was to bus its students to Sperryville Elementary, quite a distance up the road, especially in those days. She and other parents were able to get the decision changed so that Forest Grove pupils could attend Washington Elementary School, about five miles closer, instead.
