Area businesses continue to find ways to help the Soho Center with its First/Class Nursery School and Comprehensive Child Care Initiative. Two recent outdoor projects at the Soho Center’s multi-use Regional facility included donations from Culpeper Stone, Martin Marietta, Weaver Works of Madison and JCulpeper Wood Preservers.
The first project involved constructing a huge 15x30 foot sandbox. The project used 60 tons of beach sand donated by Culpeper Stone and pressure treated lumber donated by Culpeper Wood Preservers.
According to Soho’s Director, Jeanna Beker, “Our Regional Facility serves both as a training center and as a model early childhood program. We wanted a very large sandbox that would allow lots of active play. But we also wanted it to meet all the newest federal recommendations for shock absording surfaces to prevent children’s injuries. That meant a sandbox with sand at least 18 inches deep. With these donations from Culpeper Stone and Culpeper Wood, we now have what must be the biggest sandbox and safest children’s play surface in the county.”
