When I heard that figure at first I couldn’t believe it. I could remember a time in the early 1970s when legislators were complaining about the crushing work load when 1,000 or so bills and resolutions were put in one session.

In a different era when there were far fewer people and problems in the state, the General Assembly got by with meeting for 60 days every other year, unless there was a need for a special session in between.

The the idea of a 30-day short session during odd numbered years was conceived and passed as a constitutional amendment. Of course, in the two decades or so that short sessions have been the practice every one has been extended by 15 days to make a 45 day session.
