Virginia Tech and UVa have leased space jointly in the Merrifield area off Gallows Road for 10 years, but have outgrown the facility, said David N. Cooper, director of the University of Virginia’s Northern Virginia division of continuing education.

“Our goal is to expand our offerings,” said Cooper.

Robert Dennis, President of the Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) attended both hearings on Monday. “In the Senate committee there was discussion from several quarters, particularly from Nolan,” he said.

“Sen. Madison Marye (D.) of Shawsville did put on the record yesterday that all these Virginia voters just approved a park and recreation bond by an overwhelmning margin and it didn’t seem consistent to him for Virginia to go on record petitioning the Congressional delegation to do these things,” Dennis said.

This measure won’t accomplish anything “other than to send some kind of crazy message because I don’t think the U.S. Congress would ever vote to approve what it asks them to do anyway,” Dennis said. “I think it is an attempt by the property-rights movement to send a message.”
