The corrosives were put in large plastic containers. Other materials were put in larger sound steel drums. Empty barrels were flattened and piled with other debris on plastic tarpelins for later removal. * Mr. Downey said the EPA will next seek bids from licensed haulers and disposal sites before the new barrels are removed. He said he expected the barrels and debris will be removed by the end of August.

Workmen from Environmental Technology Inc. wore special protective clothing, gas masks and breathing apparatus for working at the site. Mr. Downey said the workmen are “medically monotored” to make sure they do not suffer ill effects from working with the contaminated materials.
