Schools Need Help

To the Editor:

Over the past months, or years, our county like our nation has been deeply concerned with questions which pertain to our children, and our schools. There have been debates over the purchase of property, construction of a middle school and a host of other issues.

The dilemma our community is currently facing is the physical condition of the elementary school. The incident which occurred Thursday, May 13 is the type of event which brings terror into the hearts and minds of parents.

As a parent I know that no amount of cost saving can rationalize endangering or seemingly endangering my children. Further, I am concerned that as a general rule the attitude of our school system seems to be to emphasize cost saving over children’s welfare.

The specific question I pose to the community is: are we being penny wise and pound foolish in our maintenance programs?

The general question I wish to pose to the community is: are we in our planning and implementation of programs being penny wise and pound foolish?
