Rappahannock News Contributing Writer

I was doing some home work, research, for this column, re: Rappahannock people and taxes. For natural reasons this subject comes over me every year during rthe spring.

While I was submitting my own state taxes and getting the annual assistance from the Commissioners office, I was keeping my eyes and ears open for spicy subject material.

There was a cat sleeping in the “In” basket. The most relaxed animal in the room. As everyone must know by now cats are not my favorite animals! So I threw my tax return on top of the cat, hoping to disturb it. The animal opened one eye and from beneath my tax return, impaled me. My immediate thought was to run!

I recovered and stood my ground. The cat slowly got up, stood on the return in the basket, arched into the classic cat stretch, yawned, sharpened claws on the return, lay down and went promply back to sleep; or so it appeared.

I was instructed to go to the conference room, sit down and some one would be with me in a minute. The room serves also as a kitchen of sorts. There is a sink, a microwave and a tiny refrigerator.

« I am not the nosy type so' I did not inventory the refreshments. I did look in the refrigerator but only an academic reaction. At one time I did research at a defense facility on refrigeration so you can understand how one would automatically look inside. When any of my children come to my house, before they say hello even, they look in the refrigerator. Some sort of a spiritual ritual.

But not me, it was academic. You know, checking temperature, humidity, frost build up.
