Michele May, former reporter at the Rappahannock Neu-s, has won two national arts writing awards. In the 1993 communications contest sponsored by the National Federation of Press Women, May took second place in arts reporting and an honorable mention in dramatic criticism at the national level after taking first place in both categories in the Michigan Press Women’s annual Communication Contest.
May’s arts reporting entry included three stories: a feature about the music rehearsal, a story about a group of elementary students in Benton Harbor who were writing an opera and a diary of her own experiences acting in a play at Lake Michigan College with Ron Pallilo, the TV Star who created the role of Arnold Horshack in “Welcome Back, Rotter.”
Her reviews entry covered events produced by Twin City Players, Lake Michigan College and the Lakeland Choral Society.
The two national awards will be presented during the annual awards banquet scheduled for June 19 in Kansas City, Mo.
