later charged with making a fraudulent statement. It seems that he was in domestic difficulty and his unhappy wife, hoping to send him to jail, had turned him in. The facts of the case was that, in running the farm business he raised calves for the market. In so doing he bought corn for feed as farmers do.
But he also had 12 chickens that produced 12 eggs a day. These eggs were used in his kitchen and the surplus given to friends.”
By this time I had an idea who he was talking about. This particular farmer had given me a dozen eggs one time. That was before he knew me very well. He hasn’t offered any since he found out howr high my colesterol count was.
Cal interrupted my thoughts by going on, I did not let on that I knew who he was talking about.
“Well,” he said, “the farmer was hauled before the judge and the charges were read. These charges were that he had knowingly filed a false tax return. The prosecution addressed the court and explained how they would produce witness (the farmers wife) that would prove how he had fed ground com to the chickens and at the same time deducted the costs from the operation of the farm.”
Calvin was getting his second wind by now and rushed to finish the narrative. “The judge looked angry. He stood up and raised his right hand. His voiced boomed out, “this is a frivolous charge. Case dismissed. YOU ARE TALKING CHICKEN FEED.”
As Calvin walked out the door he looked at me slyly and said, “I’ve got a million of them, come see me again.”
I asked him if he would help me write the column from now on.
He said, “No, I’m busy enough just holding that stuff down in the ‘IN’basket!”
