Wakefield School was evicted from its property in Huntly, in Rappahannock County, in August of 1991 after almost 20 years at that location. The eviction by property owner Clydetta Lynn was the result of heated conflicts between cofounder of the school (and Mrs. Lynn’s daughter-in-law) Pamela Lynn and the school’s board of directors during the spring and summer of 1991.
Pamela Lynn intended to open a new school, called Wakefield Country Day School, in the same location. However, the board of directors attempted to block her plans.
Pamela Lynn filed, and subsequently lifted, a lawsuit against school attorneys Robert Miller and William Bassett for misrepresentation.
She said they advised her to convey the property into a tax-exempt trust fund, called Educo, with Miller and Bassett as trustees. In addition, she said they told her to give up her position on the board of directors and control of the school in order to be elgible for registration in the Virginia Association of Independent Schools.
The’attorneys never recorded a deed to the property conveying the property to Educo, however, greeting Mrs. Lynn’s eviction notices with questions of who actually had ownership of the property. After several weeks of deliberation, Circuit Court Judge Thomas Horne ruled in favor of Mrs. Lynn, and Wakefield School closed its doors Aug. 12,1991.
In less than 30 days, Wakefield had found a temporary home — a wing of the Marshall Manor, a retirement home in Marshall, plus use of its manor house. The lease with Marshall Manor will end in June, 1994. This is when the new school at Arch wood Farms is slated to open.
