MARSHALL — Robert Roberts, chairman of the Board of Directors of Wakefield School in Marshall, announced May 18 that Archwood Farms in The Plains is to be the school’s new home.
Wakefield has signed a letter of intent with Charles Seilheimer, trustee for Archwood Farms, to eventually purchase 50 acres of the 1,376-acre farm, which includes a 1920’s manor house to be renovated and possibly used for administrative purposes. The terms of the sale were not disclosed.
The property is located just outside The Plains, at the intersection of Interstate 66 and Route 245.
“The location will provide an easy commute along 1-66 from Rappahannock, Warren and the western counties as well as Prince William, Loudoun and Fairfax Counties to the east and north. All of Fauquier will be within easy reach via U.S. 17,” Roberts said.
Seilheimer said that Wakefield and Archwood have been in negotiations for about six months, and Roberts said Wakefield decided on this site two weeks ago. The last two weeks were dedicated to legal arragements, Roberts said.
Seilheimer projected that the final settlement of the property will not be for several months, because Wakefield needs to work out some key details, such as architectural feasibility studies.
In addition, although the land is zoned for agricultural use, which allows for a school, it will require a special exception permit.
While Roberts said that he does not anticipate any friction from the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission, he estimated that the procedings will • take between six and seven months.
