I am professionally trained as an educator, but I am also trained as an economist. As a taxpaying parent I wish to make several observations which I hope my fellow residents will consider when debating school issues.
In first year economics we are taught there are special categories of goods which do not respond efficiently to market pressure. These goods are what we call public goods, and education is one of these special goods. Public goods are characterized by the way their costs and benefits accrue. The benefits of public goods are not concentrated on the individual or individuals who produce the goods.
The classic example of how the benefits of a public good accrue is the lighthouse which is built and maintained to guide freight-carrying ships. Now we all know that many more ships benefit from the existence of lighthouses than freighters.
Another public good example is the public park. Parks are provided to produce for relaxation and recreation in otherwise gray and automobile-ridden cities, but parks also we have found produced beneficial pollution control.
A final example of a public good is the national defense system. We all have different view’s of the benefits of this orgainzation so I will not categorize them.
