first inning. Neither team scored in the second inning, but in the bottom of the third inning Rappahannock scored five more runs including four on a grand slam home run by Deitrich Beaver.
Central closed with four runs in the top of the fourth. Beaver gave up three walks in a row, and Susan Payne came on in relief. In the bottom of the fourth Rappahannock added two more runs on Lori Paratore’s home run and led 9 to 6.
The top of the fifth inning Central added seven more runs and led 13 to 9. Beaver had returned to the pitcher’s mound and gave up several walks and hits. Rappahannock added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth when Paratore nearly gained another homer, getting called out at home after two runners scored ahead of her.
Payne was back on the mound in the top of the sixth inning and easily retired the side, but Central still led 13 to 11. Then the Panther squad added another six runs in the bottom of the inning on several Central fielding errors and led 17 to 13 going into the seventh and final inning.
With Payne on the mound, Rappahannock was one out away from victory with no one on base when the pitching collapsed and Central added nine runs to their score.
Rappahannock added one more run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was Central which advanced to semifinal competition Wednesday.
Jason Waters ran fifth in the 3200-meter race at the regional track meet Friday in Charlottesville and will run in the State meet at VMI Saturday. Sari Pellinen came in 12th in the 1600-meter race.
