Big changes are on the way for Big K Radio, WKCW-AM in Warrenton. The station is one of the few AM station that can be picked up easily in. most parts of Rappahannock County.
On the auction block just a few months ago — the asking price by New Jersey owner Joyce Crescenti was $740,000 — the station won a reprieve recently in the form of new station manager Barry Cohfen.
Cohen, who hails from northwestern New Jersey, took over as manager of the Warrenton AM last week. Former long-time manager Robert J. “Bobby Jo” Watson left last month.
With the arrival of new’ station manager, Cohen last week, and a new disk jockey, Eugene Pigeon, this week, the station hopes to return to the heights it climbed more than 20 years ago as the “oldest traditional country station in America.”
Cohen heard about the opening “from a friend of a friend,” and after a bit of investigating decided to take on the challenge of reviving a legendary country giant.
