With the start of school still three weeks in the future, high school sports were underway Monday. Try-outs and practice started for girls’ basketball varsity and junior varsity teams as well as the cross country team and cheerleaders.
Of the girls basketball teams varsity coach Gary Leake said, “This is the highest number trying out I can remember in 17 years as a student, fan and coach.” Thirty-six girls showed up Monday to try for 30 places on the two teams. Two more are expected.
He said former teams have had players with plenty of ability, but the teams have lacked depth. In the past anyone trying out was more or less automatically guaranteed a place on a team. “We were lucky to have five-on-five drills during tryouts,” coach Leake said. “Now it will be extremely competitive for the kids to earn a position.”
The Boosters Club has provided 15 new uniforms for each team, and coach Leake expects each team to keep 15 players. Some will be selected by the end of this week. Girls who want to try out but could not come this week, as well as those who do not make the original cut, will have another opportunity to try out during the first week of school, he said.
