Virginia’s first com, soybean and cotton yield forecast of the 1993 crop season indicates reduced yields from the previous year, according to the Virginia Agricultural Statistics Service. The State’s com for grain yield is expected to average only 70 bushels per acre based on conditions as of August 1, down 46 bushels from last year’s record level. Soybean yields are expected to average 24 bushels per acre, down seven bushels from 1992. Cotton yiels are forecast at 600 pounds (1.25 bales) per acre, down 21 pounds from last year’s 621 pounds (1.29 bales) per acre yield.
Record temperatures and widely scattered precipitaiton, across the State during most of June and throughout July, have placed extreme stress on most crops. Yield expectations have been significantly reduced not only for com and soybeans but also for other forage and fall crops.
