Beyer, who praised Clinton's “guts and vision,” nevertheless said he has met business owners who are already reacting negatively to plan.
“They are uniformly upset,” he said. “They say they were going to expand their businesses, but now they are going to keep it status quo.”
Beyer joins his running mate, former state attorney general and gubernatorial nominee Mary Sue Terry, in opposing Clinton’s plan. Hie plan narrowly passed the House and Senate two weeks ago.
Beyer’s criticism reflects those made by Republican congressional lawmakers who have argued that the plan will hurt businesses and cripple an already weak economic recovery.
Many congressional Democrats reportedly were reluctant to vote for the plan, and wondered how their constituents will react to it.
Beyer would not speculate whether the plan’s lack of popularity will hurt Ms. Terry and her Democratic running mates this fall.
“It’s hard to predict, but you play the hand you’re dealt with,” he said.
