to summer basketball camps and the success of the girls’ volleyball and softball teams.
This year there is a new coach for the junior varsity team. Emily Wingate is a new part-time teacher at the elementary school. She played basketball at Madison High School and at Emory and Henry College. She is enthusiastic about her new team and looking forward to the season.
The girls have two home games in the first week of school. They will open against Central of Woodstock on Tuesday September 7 and play Page County Thursday September 9. Junior varsity games begin at 6 p.m. and varsity games follow, usually at about 7:30.
Cheerleaders also started practice this week. New sponsor Tammye Deimel had her girls working on their routines Monday morning. They must also be ready to perform by the first game on the opening day of school.
There was a small group of students out for the cross country team Monday morning. Coach David van de Graaff said he expects more students to show up for practice later.
The cross country team has its opening meet at the Radford Invitational Saturday September 11. The first district meet will be at Stonewall Jackson Wednesday September 15, and the team will host a meet with Luray on Monday September 20. The home course is on the Bleu Rock Inn property.
