The number of Home Based Businesses continued to increase. According to the Small Business Administration in 1992 there were 20.7 million small businesses in the United States, an increase from 14.9 million in 1988. Of that number 68 percent are sole proprietorhsip and 27 percent are owned by women, a sharp increased for 1980.
There are several possible reasons why people try a home based business. Some new home based business are started as a result of “moonlighting.” This provides a means of testing a businesss idea and building a client base while maintaining a salary through the diffiuclt start-up years.
