Sperryville sewer plant operator Donna Chabot came to the Water and Sewer Authority meeting Thursday to report that she was in the process of replacing one of the part-time operators at the plant and that a flow meter is failing and will have to be repaired or replaced.

Ms. Chabot said one of the two part-time operators who have been running the plant on weekends and holidays has resigned. She said a new part-time operator to work every other weekend and every other holiday would be needed. She said she had two applications and had solicited more applications through a newspaper ad. She said the weekend operators do not have to be certified.

Ms. Chabot said the flow meter, which measures flow from the plant, had been calibrated last March and measures accurately, but sometimes it stops working completely. She said it seemed to be sensitive to temperature, since it had failed during hot weather last summer and it is again failing at night this fall when the temperature falls.

She presented WSA members with bids from Design Electric of Charlottesville, the firm that calibrated the meter, to repair or replace it. The bid to repair it was $2,700 and would carry a 30-day guarantee. The bid to replace the meter was $3,250 and would carry a one-year guarantee.

WSA members, noting that the budget does not include funds for such costs, asked Ms. Chabot to bring back more information or bids.

Treasurer Carson Johnson reported that the checking account was very low at the end of September, just before new bills reflecting the new rates were sent out. He said he had received complaints about the new rates after the bills went out.
