Governor, Mike Farris, is mainly , known as a leading proponent of home schooling. Mr. Farris and his wife proudly teach their nine children at home and propose this as an alternative to public schools. As everybody knows there are many serious problems with public education and it is a politically correct article of faith in certain circles that the condition of public education is so bad that the white flag of surrender be run up the pole and we should abandon the public schools altogether. I do not doubt the sincerity of Mr. Farris’ beliefs, but I believe he is sincerely wrong if he proposes home schooling as a realistic solution to the problems of education. You can bet that the Japanese and the Germans, our chief economic competitors, are not educating their children at home. For the forseeable future, the only viable option for Virginia’s parents is to send their children to a school, whether it be public or private, and we do not need elected officials, like Mr. Farris, who are not in the real world.
