After years of increasingly specialized — and expensive — exercise regimens, a new program stresses a return to the basics.

Lifelines, developed by twins Barry and Garry Ross, revolves around a one-hour program of intensive, and varied, exercises focusing on building cardiovascular endurance, strength and flexibility.

The Ross brothers, both veteran exercise trainers, developed their Lifelines Training and Conditioning Program after seeing the mixed results of more traditional exercise programs.

In an article written with Dr. Daniel N. Kulund in The Journal of Musculoskeletal Medicine, (August 1992) the brothers explained that most conditioning programs, including popular exercises like running, cycling and aerobics, often lead to overuse injuries because of their concentration on a few select muscle groups.
