To the Editor:
George Allen, the Republican candidate for Governor of Virginia, is running a TV commerical in which he brags that during the one year he served in the U.S. Congress, he turned back 15 percent of his office expenses, saving the taxpayers $140,000. By his own figures, this means that he spent 85 percent, or $793,000.
Presumably this does not include his salary, which was $129,500. Thus, it cost the taxpayers almost a million dollars to keep George in Congress for a one-year course on how to throw money away, the worst possible training for a Governor of Virginia. Does anyone think this was a good investment of the taxpayers’ money?
