Donna Porterfield, who works for Appelshop in far southwest Virginia and eastern Kentucky, contrasted what is happening in Rappahannock County with the region where she works. She said that most of the land in her area is owned by multi-national energy companies and has been strip mined.
However, young people in the area are rediscovering their history and culture, and documenting it in photographs and video, she said. She added that the most important part of the Crossroads Festival was the planning and work that took place before the event was held.
Joyce Abell said the “wonderful weekend has developed organically.”. She said organizers should not worry about how the event will develop in the future. “Keep your eyes on the central purpose, to bring the community together, and every year it is going to be better.”
