a screening mammogram. The charge has not increased since 1990 when the hospital lowered its rate to make mammograms available less expensively, according to hospital spokesman Peter Fakoury.
“We’ve tried hard to set a low price for screening mammograms because we feel it’s a service to the community,” said Dr. Daniel.
One of the reasons so many women fail to get regular mammograms is fear. Common concerns about the procedure include breast pain during the test and exposure to the radiation of the x-ray machine.
“There may be some minor discomfort, which varies from woman to woman, but it lasts only a few seconds,” said Stephanie Kincade, one of the hospital’s mammography technologists. “We try to do it as comfortably as possible.”
Most experts agree that mammography is safe. Fauquier Hospital uses only low-dose equipment which is designed only for mammography, according to Dr. Daniel.
“It’s designed just for one purpose,” she said. “It’s the difference between a point-and-shoot camera and a photographer’s Nikon with 87 different lenses. You couldn’t use mammography equipment to make a
