Preferred Provider Organizations are organized by insurance carriers, associations who offer memberships and allow you to join their group health care plan or even sometimes a group of doctors. They are not required to be a licensed health insurance carrier.

Preferred Provider Organizations are networks of providers of care who have met certain legal and ethical standards. Physicians or participating providers of care agree to see treat patients and charge at a reduced rate in exchange for benefits such as direct payment to the provider or for a much faster turnaround on their reimbursement for services rendered.

The average cost would be the 80 percent to 20 percent ratio which most of us have normally paid; 80 percent being covered by the insurance company after you have paid your prearranged deductible and your 20 percent co-payment.

If you are being seen for something which falls into the mental health or substance abuse category your insurance company will generally pay at a rate of 50 percent rather than 80 percent which it covers on medical problems.
