As defined by the 1993 legislation, the Board will be comprised of 12 members including the presidents of the Virginia Horse Council, the Virginia Thoroughbred Association, the Virginia Horse Shows Association and the Virginia Quarter Horse Association (the four associations which sponsored the referendum legislation); the Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services; the extension horse specialist from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. In addition, six board members will be appointed by the Governor including four members from other statewide breed or use associations; a representative of the horse industry supply service or professional community (feed manufacturing or sales, pharmaceutical sale, horseshoeing, veterinary services, etc.); and a representative commercially involved in the industry such as a manager or trainer.
