GMU dosed the debate season on March 20 at the National Debate Tournament in Kentucky, edging out Ivy League schools such as Harvard, Dartmouth and Boston College to become the number one debate team in the nation.
Jennifer Tomeden, a junior varsity team member, joined the debate team because she was interested in researching and learning before she joined the team. “I fell in love with the research,” Tomeden said. UI learned so much more in (debate) than in school.”
Debaters prepare to argue both sides of a theme of debate for the season. This year’s topic was whether or not the President of the United States’ power as commander-in-chief should be. Debaters log in at least 40 hours a week practicing and researching during the academic year.
