“You have to care to do it well. I wouldn’t trade this job for anything.”

Several years earlier, Charlie’s other cargiver Terry Hitt lost her mother to cancer. “She stayed with me and my husband while she was sick. They when she went to the hospital, she didn’t want me out of her sight. I wish I’d known about Hospice a couple of years ago.” Terry speaks quietly as she watches the nurse talk with Charlie. “I have worked in a nursing home, and families just seem to forget about them,” Terry says.

A few miles from the Hitt family residence is the home of Virgie Sanders who cared for her sister Julia Leahy with the help of Hospice of the Rapidan until Ms. Leahy’s death Sunday.

The pair bubbled over with enthusiasm and their eyes sparkled, though Julia tired more easily in her last days.

Ms. Leahy retired after twentyfive years of service at the Naval Exchange office at Bethesda Naval Hospital, and she lived with her sister for the past six years. She had been in the Hospice program for three months.
