Mr. Gene Walker. 7th grade teacher at Rappahannock County Elementary School, who was unable to attend, was accorded the honor of Outstanding American History Teacher.
With the afternoon devoted to students and schools, it was appropriate tor Mrs. Edgar F. Puryear, Jr. to describe the six schools supported by the DAR — five in Appalachia and one in Massachusetts. All were founded by women who saw the desperate need for education in areas where there were no schools or they were inaccessible, or where finances precluded any education for the children.
Following the program, Mrs. Eastham invited all to a lovely tea served by the hostesses Mrs Billy R Ballard, Mrs. John J. McDevitt and Miss Marylee F. Newman.
The next meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. on April 11 at the Culpeper United Methodist Church when Mrs. Owen Charles Baker, Docent and Tour Guide at the National Gallery of Art, will give a program on American painting in the National Gallery accompanied with slides.
All members are urged to attend.
