Virginia will soon be one of only two states in the nation that prohibit an incumbent governor from succeeding himself or herself.
Legislation to eliminate that constitutional prohibition was introduced again this year in the General Assembly, but failed.
Yet most believe the one-term and out provision will soon be changed.
Perhaps, that will be for the be$t, though an argument can be made that the term limit for state chief executives has its merits.
As former Governor Linwood Holton mentioned, a governor who cannot succeed himself or herself is less likely to engage in expedient politics for the sake or re-election and more likely to stay focused on doing what is best of the people without regard to political considerations.
The only Governor in Virginia history to serve two terms was Mills Godwin. That came after he served as a Democrat from 1966-70, waited four years and returned to win as a Republican and serve from 19741978.
