Andolyn Saunders Fitzgerald is a new mental health therapist at Family Guidance Services in Washington.
She is a child specialist, but sees other clients too. Some of the children she sees are referred by the Department of Social Serv ices, some have problems in school, some have adjustment problems with divorced parents, and some have been abused.
“I try to take a family approach as much as possible. You have to look at their history and background and look at the family,” Mrs. Fitzgerald said about working with children.
She will sometimes have the children use puppets or do drawings to learn more about them. She might ask them to draw their family, their favorite thing, or what they did this week. Looking at these drawings can sometimes tell her a lot about the child, she says.
Her sessions with children usually last from 30 to 45 minutes, though meeting with adult clients may last up to an hour. She also counsels inmates at the Rappahannock County jail, sometimes because of a court order. She does parent consultations and parent training. If a crisis occurs, she is able to handle that problem too.
