Clerk Diane Bruce said most such contacts are a matter of educating the legislators. She said it is as unreasonable to expect them to understand what the constitutional officers do as to expect her to know how to run Mr. Massie’s cattle farm.
Mr. McCarthy reported with good weather work has resumed on the new cell at the landfill. The new cell can be ready in about 60 days, he said.
Mr. McCarthy and Piedmont District representative Charles K. “Pete” Estes reported on the meeting on state primary roads held in Culpeper last month. Mr. McCarthy said funds for studying the Sperryville by-pass are included in the six-year plan.
He also said that many people asked VDOT to ban tractor-trailer traffic on U.S. 17 between Interstate 66 and U.S. 50. He said since a new truck scales was put on Interstate 81, more trucks were using U.S. 17, and scales are proposed for U.S. 17. He noted that when another section of U.S. 17 was closed truck traffic on U.S. 522 from Chester Gap to Massie’s Comer tripled.
Mr. Estes said that requests to close U.S. 17 to truck traffic “went on for hours.”
Mr. McCarthy reported he spoke in opposition to that idea.
