meetings are held during this time period. The high school has also instituted tutoring sessions during this time period with each department assigned one day a week for tutoring students who have fallen behind. Each teacher has one day of tutoring and one day of supervising the lunchroom during the week.
At Warren County High School a modified alternating day block schedule was adopted this year. First period class meets every day for a regular time period. During the rest of the day students take three longer-period classes one day and three different classes the next. Lunch is scheduled during the third class period in four sections, with some classes having lunch then class, others having part of a class and then lunch and then the rest of class, and other classes meeting first and then having lunch.
Representatives from both schools report students are happy with their new schedules except when they have teachers who try to lecture for the entire class period.
In Fauquier County committees at Fauquier High School and Liberty High School are exploring block scheduling. The committees have held regular meetings and teachers have begun visiting classes in schools that already have block scheduling. Guidance counselor Marilyn Diloreto said they have made no commitment to move to block scheduling. “We are exploring the possibility and want to see first what advantages there are for students,” she said.
