He noted that federal and state funds used to cover about half of the school budget and said the tax rate could be 14 cents lower if federal and state funds were still picking up half the cost. “Federal and state governments have shifted more and more of the costs onto local govememtn, but they don’t give us more say in how we spend it,” he said.

Jackson District representative Ellis Bingham said, “I’m a big supporter of education....but if the property tax continues to increase, we will have a whole new level of homeless.”

School Board Chairman Beverly Massie said she was pleased to see more people at the hearing than is usual for such events. She said, “Our children are coming from a different environment than we did.”
