the ground water and wells at the Aileen plant and the well at the Flint Hill Pentecostal Church are contaminated. It may also give information about when the contamination first occurred, and what will be required to clean it up.
Aileen has been providing the church with bottled water since its well was found to be contaminated, though the contamination has not been conclusively linked to the closed Aileen factory.
The well at the church was found to have unsafe levels of DCA, DCE and ICE. A test showed that the level of DCA was 13 ppb (parts per billion); the maximum contamination level according to the EPA is 5 ppb. The well also tested as having 13 ppb of DCE and 110 ppb of TCE. The maximum safe level for DCE and TCE is also 5 ppb.
Mr. von Till said that most of the concentrations found are not that high, but the bottled water is provided because of the risk involved.
He said that testing at the plant has been especially difficult because geology there is particularly complex. “There are a lot of fractures involved," he said.
Also, DEQ has been testing several private wells in the area of the Aileen plant on a regular basis, and none of them have shown contamination.
