After three sizzling days in Paris (and 1 mean the temperature, not the intrigue hinted at in the old love song “I Love Paris”), my husband and 1 were ready to begin our ambitious, self-planned tour of three areas in France neither of us had visited before. > This would be our first trip to Europe without our children, who were at overnight camp, and we wanted to create our dream vacation in France: romantic, buttressed by history and culture and, of course, spiced with long, delicious meals. We devised a day-by-day outline for visiting by car, first the Loire Valley and her chateaux, then the seaside port city of La Rochelle and directly offshore the beguiling island of lie de Re, and finally a turn deep into southwest France through thousands of acres of world-renowned v ineyards to the heart of French Basque country.
